Scaling and polishing your teeth is one of the most important things to get done to keep your mouth healthy and clean. Everyone gets some plaque on their teeth ( the soft white stuff that most people wake up with on your teeth ) You can brush it off very easily. If that plaque is left , it comes into contact with calcium in saliva and hardens to form tartar or calculus (both the same thing) .
If it's left for a few days it will cause a bit of bleeding when you brush (gingivitis) . If its left for months or even years it can attack the gums and the bone causing loose teeth and bad breath ( periodontal disease).
It needs to be done perfectly, That's why we employ Hygienists who don't just quickly clean them, they spend the time to make sure all calculus or tartar is gone, they polish to teeth to make them smooth so they feel great, and they spend the time with you to help you keep them that way.
